White Jaguars Triumph Over KCCA Leopards with Dominant Fourth-Quarter Comeback to win game 1

The JT Lady Jaguars defeated the KCCA Leopards 65-55 with a dominant fourth-quarter comeback in front of their ever growing beloved NBL Fraternity crowd at the Lugogo Arena. The Lady Jaguars’ overall record is now 2-1 on the season against the Leopards, with a 1-0 lead in the quarterfinal series.

The Lady Jaguars went without a basket for seven whole minutes into the second quarter until Brenda Kayaga was sent to the free-throw line at the 2:59 mark, responding to a 7-0 run by the Leopards.

What were the Lady Jaguars doing all this time? The answer is simple—defense. They had to limit the firepower of the Leopards, who led 23-16 at the end of the first period. A strategy that seemed to work. In the second quarter, KCCA managed only 9 points compared to the Jaguars’ 8. It was as if Coach Sudi was executing a military strategy, prioritizing defense to reduce the opponent’s firepower, much like an army fortifying its position to withstand an enemy assault before launching a counterattack. The first half still ended with KCCA ahead, 32-24.

The second half saw a complete shift in momentum, as the Jaguars took control of the game and launched the counterattack. The team made 23 baskets, particularly from speedster Ruth Letaru and Brenda Kayaga, whose energy was undeniably amazing. As I mentioned in the early morning blog, Brenda Kayaga gets more lethal each day. She scored 14 points in the second half with 5 rebounds and 2 assists, contributing a total of 18 points to the victory overall.

Entering the fourth period down by 2 points at 49-47, Brenda Kayaga shouldered the Jaguars’ offense, tying the game at 49 at the 7:54 mark. After that burst of momentum, Sandra Wangeshi went for a layup to hand the Lady Jaguars their first lead of the night at 51-49. From then on, the Lady Jaguars never looked back. KCCA tried to play catch-up, but the Lady Jaguars responded back dominantly until the final buzzer, ultimately outcompeting KCCA.

As a team, the JT Lady Jaguars shot 30% from the field and 11% from 3-point range in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Jaguars also dominated the Leopards on the boards, with 63 rebounds in total and 20 offensive rebounds. Those second-chance opportunities accounted for 14 of the Lady Jaguars’ points. Three key players registered double-digit points: Brenda Kayaga with 18 points, Maimuna Nabbosa with 15, and Sarah Ageno, the birthday girl, with 11 points and 11 rebounds, matching her jersey number 11.

Coach Sudi was highly impressed with the team’s performance sighting it one of the best he has watched this season. He acknowledged if we continue to play the way we played today, we can be even better.

Despite the praise, the team still has a Turn over problem ⚠ after commit ting over 21 turnovers. We need to work on our ball handles, we have enough time to prepare for the next game and we shall use it effectively

However, amidst the celebration, the battle is not yet over. The Lady Jaguars must play Game 2 of the quarterfinals against the same team to advance to the semifinals. Will they dominate again, or will KCCA rise from the ashes? Stay with us for more updates and insights on the team’s strategy for the next game.
