By now, one thing should be clear: when you talk about basketball in Kira, you are talking about the Kira Jaguars Basketball Club. The club has grown beyond the basketball court to become an integral part of the community of Kira, nurturing talent and building a basketball culture that continues to produce results.
Last weekend, that commitment to grassroots basketball development received another reward as Kira SS were crowned champions of the KT Rach Women’s Basketball Tournament, defeating St. Cyprian 30–27 in a closely contested final.
Kira SS are, in essence, the Kira Junior Lady Jaguars, a team that represents the club’s commitment to developing young female basketball players and preparing them for the demands of competitive basketball.
Not long ago, the team was enduring a difficult period, having failed to register a single victory in their previous seasons. However, rather than allowing those struggles to define them, the players and coaching staff continued to work, improve and build towards a better future.
The results have since begun to show.
The team progressed to the semifinals of the Division One Women’s Basketball competition, marking a significant improvement from their previous campaign. That progress provided a clear indication of the work being done behind the scenes and the potential within the squad.
Winning the KT Rach tournament was therefore a fitting continuation of their season. It offered the players another opportunity to test themselves, compete for silverware and, ultimately, put their growth on full display.
Against St. Cyprian, Kira SS showed enough composure to edge a tightly contested final by three points, securing the championship and adding another milestone to their development journey.
Speaking on behalf of the team, spokesperson Morgan expressed pride in the players’ progress, highlighting the challenges they have overcome and the determination that has brought them this far.
“It has been a struggle, and finally, we are reaping the fruits. We are happy about the performance of the team. We shall remain committed to having a better season next year,” Morgan said.
His remarks reflect the journey of a team that has continued to put in the work despite earlier disappointments. From struggling to secure victories to reaching the Division One semifinals and now lifting a tournament trophy, Kira SS are beginning to see the rewards of their persistence.
The achievement also highlights the importance of sustained investment in youth basketball. Developing a competitive team takes time, patience and commitment from the players, coaches and management. Kira SS’s progress is evidence of what can happen when those elements come together.
For the Kira Jaguars Basketball Club, the victory reinforces the value of its grassroots programme and the role it continues to play in creating opportunities for young players to grow through the game.
