The team has 4chances to decide their fate as they approach the playoffs Snr. Writer A.A Johnson | 10 July,2025 | 3:40

Let’s be real, the way forward for the Black Jaguars is simple: we either fix this now or we miss out on the playoffs. There is no sugarcoating anything at this point. This isn’t the NBA where you get second chances through an in-play tournament — here, you’re either in the playoffs or you’re out. No middle ground.

And with the way this season is going, nothing is guaranteed. The league has become too unpredictable. Teams you thought were unbeatable are now losing back-to-back. KIU Titans just pulled off a huge win against a top side. The table has shifted completely in just a matter of weeks. Thankfully, two teams have made peace with facing relegation; otherwise, it would have been a battle down there.

But let’s turn the focus to the main center of conversation — the MIGHTY JT JAGUARS.

This is only the second time the team is competing in the NBL, yet it’s the second time we’re seeing the same worrying pattern. I’ll remind you — last year, we had a very solid round one until towards the end of round two, where we completely lost our rhythm. We lost four straight games heading into the playoffs, and the Titans wasted no time sweeping us out.

Now fast forward to this season, and it’s starting to look all too familiar. We’ve now lost three in a row — to Victoria, JKL, and most recently, Rezlife. Just a few games ago, we were third on the table. As I write this, we’re sitting eighth. And I’m not even exaggerating when I say this — one more slip and we’re out of the playoff picture completely. That’s what it will look like if we don’t man up and play like the top-tier team that everyone once saw at the beginning of this season.

And that’s still so possible. We still have four games left. That’s four chances to turn this thing around. A strong finish could easily push us back into the top five. It’s all still in our hands. But if we mess around, we’ll either miss out entirely or end up being eighth on the table and facing a top seed that will have fun knocking us out in the quarterfinals.

We have no choice but to respond. We need to treat every single possession in these remaining games like our season depends on it — because it does.

It starts with the Oilers on Friday.
