The JT Lady Jaguars are the best defensive team in the WNBL

The White Jaguars asserted their dominance and were rewarded with the number one seed after a victory over the Nkumba Lady Marines, securing a decisive 76–33 victory on Sunday at the YMCA courts in Wandegeya.

In what was a smooth plaining game for most of it, Mary Priscilla and Ageno Sarah combined for 28 points, while Shakira Nabayunga chipped in with 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals.

Aziida Lubega also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, matched by Sarah Ageno, who added 14 points and 10 rebounds of her own.

The White Jaguars held the Lady Marines to fewer than 10 points in every quarter, putting their newly strengthened defense on full display.

Speaking of defense, Coach Sudi opted for an aggressive full-court press throughout the game which frustrated their opponents. The Lady Marines were visibly uncomfortable from the get-go, eventually coughing up over 40 turnovers. That pressure wore them down mentally and physically, leading to what became an inevitable blowout, 76-33.

But the Lady Jaguars’ dominance wasn’t just about their defense, Nkumba’s offense simply wasn’t clicking. Only three of their starting five managed to raise 7 points each, and their bench added just 8 points in total. It was clear that the Marines couldn’t find their rhythm on either end of the court. This was one of those games where the outcome felt predictable from the tip-off. So, rather than focus on the celebration, this blog will engage much on execution in terms of offending and defending the basketball;

Defensively, We’re Still the Standard

In terms of defense, kudos to the team — they were absolutely fantastic. We continue to stand tall as the best defensive team in the league, and that’s all thanks to the relentless work and strategic brilliance of the coaching staff. Yesterday, the Lady Jaguars leaned heavily into a full-court press, making life extremely uncomfortable for the Lady Marines. That pressure paid off massively — 40 turnovers were forced, and the team kept feeding off that energy throughout the game. Even though we committed 17 turnovers ourselves, we had the discipline to fall back and recover on defense, limiting the Lady Marines to just 13 points off our mistakes. We also had a season night steals amounting to 29 in number which was evidence of how good the team was on defense.

Now offensively,

We didn’t really punish the Lady Marines to the fullest, a lot of scoring opportunities were wasted.

Statistically speaking, there’s a clear issue. You simply can’t attempt 95 field goals and only convert 30 — that’s a shooting percentage of just 31%. Even more concerning is our performance from beyond the arc. We attempted 31 three-pointers and managed to sink only four. That’s an alarming 13% from deep.

Right now, everything we do must be in preparation for the playoffs — and shooting drills should be top priority, especially now that The Den is up and running. If we’re going to compete at the highest level, these numbers must improve.

Of course, everyone has off days, but not every day can be an off day. While the lack of a home court earlier in the season might have limited our shooting reps, that excuse no longer applies.

The good news is ~thanks to the club management~we have the newest basketball court in town. So now, the responsibility lies with the team: Do we want to shoot the ball, or not? PRACTICE !! Practice !! Practice !!

Either way, a win is a win and now, we move on to the next.
