Onto the playoffs… maybe.
The cruel reality of basketball is that no matter how much effort you put in, it ultimately means nothing if you don’t win the game. The JT Jaguars learned that again after falling 70–73 to the UMU Flames in another tightly contested finish decided in clutch time.
For three quarters and most of the fourth, the Jaguars found themselves chasing the game. Yet, when the final minutes arrived and the odds looked firmly against them, they responded with the kind of fight that has defined much of their season, even in defeat.
Down eight points with just 33 seconds remaining in regulation at 65–73, the Jaguars appeared all but finished.
Then came the late push.
Duncan Lubwama calmly knocked down two free throws before Sifuma buried a huge three-pointer that suddenly breathed life back into the contest, cutting the deficit to 70–73. What had looked like a comfortable UMU Flames victory quickly turned into a one-possession game.
The Jaguars immediately shifted into clock-management mode, intentionally fouling to send UMU to the free-throw line and banking on missed opportunities. The gamble worked, at least partially.
Twice, the Flames were sent to the line. Twice, they failed to fully capitalize, giving the Jaguars chances to extend the game. But on both occasions, they could not convert in the final moments.
The ball eventually found its way to Chol, who had been shooting at around 40% from beyond the arc, but he was unable to convert either attempt, and the Jaguars fell short at 70–73.
Duncan Lubwama led the way with 22 points and 8 rebounds, while Christian added 11 points and 4 rebounds.
What It Means
The Jaguars’ playoff hopes have taken another hit following the loss. Their postseason chances now depend on the Victoria Crocs securing a win over UPDF, with their fate no longer entirely in their own hands.
