In a game that was within their grasp, the White Jaguars saw a hard-fought battle slip away in the final moments, falling to the JKL Lady Dolphins 51-48 in Game 1 of the WNBL semifinals on Friday night. Despite a strategic shift from their quarterfinals approach, which saw them open with an aggressive push, the Jaguars’ late-game struggles unraveled three quarters of solid play.

Brenda Kayaga, the driving force behind the White Jaguars’ offense, led her team with 9 points. However, her efforts could not compensate for a difficult shooting night, as the Jaguars managed just 3-of-13 from beyond the arc—a statistic that loomed large in the game’s closing minutes. Mercy B anchored the defense with 14 rebounds, adding 6 points and 1 assist to her stat line. Meanwhile, the Lady Dolphins were buoyed by Brenda Ekone’s relentless attack, as she posted a game-high 15 points, including two crucial free throws that turned the game in JKL’s favor at the end of the third quarter.

The game began with promise for the White Jaguars. Determined to avoid their previous slow starts, they opened strong, shooting 33% from the field in the first quarter. Rhoda Nagitta, Sarah Ageno, and Nabbosa Mai were all in rhythm early, helping the Jaguars weather the storm. On the other side, Ekone kept the Lady Dolphins within striking distance, scoring 8 of her 15 points in the opening frame. A clutch layup by Sandra Wangeshi at the buzzer gave the Jaguars a 17-14 lead, but the Lady Dolphins were undeterred.
The Jaguars maintained their lead through the next two quarters, battling to hold a slim advantage. However, it became clear that the Lady Dolphins were playing the long game, steadily chipping away at the Jaguars’ lead. The Jaguars’ offense began to sputter in the third quarter, managing just 13 points compared to JKL’s 15. The turning point came at the end of the third quarter when Ekone’s two free throws nudged JKL ahead, 40-39, marking their first lead of the night. As Coach Sudi noted post-game, “In as much as we play very good defense, we need to play offense because without it, we can’t win the game.”
The fourth quarter was a nail-biter, with both teams trading baskets in a furious back-and-forth. However, at the 6:36 mark, the Jaguars’ offense went cold. Becky Longom capitalized for JKL, scoring back-to-back buckets that provided the cushion they needed. Despite their best defensive efforts, the Jaguars couldn’t close the gap. Ageno’s layup in the dying seconds brought them within two, but a foul on Jane Asinde sealed their fate. Asinde split her free throws, sinking one and putting the game out of reach.

Reflecting on the tough loss, Rhoda Nagitta was blunt: “We clearly lost the game ourselves. We lost energy and morale in the last minutes. They had nothing left but to fight for the game, yet we had it in our hands. We need to come back with better, consistent energy ready to win.”
Coach Sudi found a silver lining amid the disappointment: “I’m impressed with the team. We cut down from over 32 turnovers in the previous game to just 19, which is good, and we hope to build on that come Sunday.”
The White Jaguars will return to the court this Sunday for Game 2 at the YMCA at 2:00 PM EAT.
