“Next season, I plan on working on my post moves, finishing around the basket, and making as many shots as I can, including three-pointers.”

That was Mercy’s response when asked about her plans for the next season and how she intends to keep improving—just as she did on her way to becoming Kira8 MVP.

This blog focuses on Mercy’s journey: where she started, how her basketball career has developed so far, and how she has managed to pursue basketball while playing netball concurrently.

“I picked up interest in basketball in 2022 while I was at Kampala University, where I started training with the team,” Mercy says.

Her early progress was interrupted by an ACL injury, which ruled her out of competition when Division One games began. As a result, she did not feature in any games in 2022.

In 2023, after treatment and recovery, Mercy returned to action and played for Kampala University in the NBL season, marking her first full competitive year in basketball. Her performances showed steady improvement and led to interest from the JT Jaguars, whom she joined for the 2024 season.

Alongside basketball, Mercy has continued to play netball—a commitment that demands double the effort and constant attention to fitness.

This year marks Mercy’s third year playing basketball and her second season with the JT Jaguars. Last season, she earned recognition as Top Rebounder, and this season, she has taken her game to the next level. Just in 2025 alone, Mercy has secured an impressive array of accolades:

  • Kira8 MVP
  • All-Star Women’s Tournament – Top Rebounder
  • NBL Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY)
  • NBL Team of the Season
  • KT Rach Tournament – Top Rebounder
  • Kira8 Top 5

“These trophies mean a lot to me,” Mercy says. “They show that the work I put in is finally showing, and I’m really grateful.”

Mercy on being MVP

“I always prayed to God to make me MVP, and He brought it at the right time,” she says. “I’m very grateful. The feeling, the pride—it means everything.”

While the awards reflect success, the journey was far from easy. Playing two sports meant carrying emotional and physical fatigue from one competition into another, often without time to reset.

“Playing two sports is fun until it’s time to pick yourself up after losing,” Mercy admits.

“Imagine losing a game on Friday night, then having another big match on Saturday. You can’t show emotions—you just have to compete again.”

There were moments of exhaustion and doubt, but quitting was never an option.

“Giving up has never been my thing. I tell myself I’ve got this, step on the court, and compete,” she says. She credits supportive teammates and staff for helping her stay mentally strong throughout the season.

The Way Forward

After a long season, Mercy plans to spend the festive break with her family before turning her focus to the future. Asked about her goals for the new year, she didn’t hesitate:

  • Win the WNBL Championship
  • Make it to the Gazelles (National Team)
  • Expand her career, especially her offensive game

Mercy remains deeply grateful to the JT Jaguars for believing in her and providing the support she needed to grow in the sport. She also extends heartfelt thanks to her fans and everyone who has supported and believed in her journey.

Looking ahead, she promises even more dedication and improved performances next season. As the year comes to a close, Mercy wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2026, with hopes for a season full of achievements and joy.
